Dennis Young
Canadian Military Police Officer
"Regulating and controlling drugs would reduce the level of violence, while saving taxpayers billions of dollars"
Dennis Young served for 12 years in the Canadian army, starting in the infantry and ending with six years as a Military Police officer. His MP duties involved the full spectrum of law enforcement, including drug interdiction and arrests. Dennis represents a growing number of current and former law-enforcers who have joined LEAP after concluding that the war on drugs has failed to achieve even one of its stated goals.
Concerned about the role of the drug war in violating individual civil liberties, such as the increasing abuses of search and seizure laws, Dennis sees the drug war as an excuse for Government to expand policies and programs that are ineffective and lack sufficient scrutiny or accountability.
There are many parallels between the current Canadian drug war problems and those created in the United States under Alcohol Prohibition. By regulating and controlling drugs, Young knows we would reduce the level of violence in our cities, while saving taxpayers billions of dollars by cutting the wasteful drug war spending. "Repealing drug prohibition would limit government growth when spending on wasteful programs desperately needs to be curtailed." Illicit drugs are readily available on many street corners and Young, believes this is an issue about statistics, not safety. He is also leery of how the Government uses the drug problem as a vehicle for requesting more cops and increasing the role of government in our private lives.
Today, Young is a private business owner in Alberta. He keeps quite active performing many athletic and challenging activities including 220 skydiving events, competing in Muay Thai tournaments, and full mixed martial arts competitions.
Dennis points out that Albert Einstein warned us, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while each time expecting a different result." Sadly, repeating the same failed policies year after year has been the affect of the war on drugs. With his experience in law enforcement, Dennis, articulates the problems of Prohibition and offers other options to the failed drug war in a direct, concise, and down-to-earth manner.
A leader of a Canadian political party, Dennis Young is also an author. His first novel, Gonzo Soldier, is based on his journey in life. |
